Often Should a Porta Potty be Serviced?

For long term applications a weekly service (or after 80-100 uses) is sufficient to meet the needs of most users. However, for large special events a porta potty service may be needed on a daily or nightly basis. When renting a portable toilet be sure to discuss your specific needs with the customer service representative to ensure that your toilets will be serviced at an appropriate frequency.

What is a Porta Potty Made of?

The standard porta potty is manufactured using components made out of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic and aluminum. Some small components like springs and fasteners are made out of steel. Rails to support the porta potty above the ground can be made out of wood or plastic. This makes the porta potty very light and easy to move and transport.

Should a Porta Potty be Staked Down?

Since Porta Potties are small and light this makes them easy to tip over. Inclement weather and rowdy teenagers can easily knock over a porta potty which can make it non-usable until a technician comes to service the unit. Servicing a unit that has been knocked over can also be challenging since the waste and chemicals have to be cleaned up manually. With that said, you should consider staking down your porta potties for the duration of your special event.

What Colors do Porta Potties Come in?

Since Porta Potties are mostly made out of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic they can essentially be manufactured in any color. Most porta potties are either a bright blue or a gray color. Porta potties are also commonly found in navy blue, teal, orange, and white.

Can Portable Toilets be Used in Hot Climates?

Yes, in fact porta potties do very well in warm climates. Today’s porta potties are designed to optimize airflow within the unit and additional equipment such as solar or battery power fans are available to keep the air moving. Bacteria within the holding tank can be more active in a warm climate so additional chemicals are usually added to counteract this the increase in bacterial activity.

How Big is a Porta Potty?

Standard porta potty measures approximately 4 feet by 4 feet or about 16 square feet. Some models are smaller however standard ADA compliant restrooms must have enough room for a wheel chair to enter and turn around. An ADA compliant unit can typically measures around 40 square feet. Most standard porta potties are between 7.5 feet and 8 feet tall.

What are some of the Features of a Porta Potty?

Porta potties are designed to fit a lot of things into a small space. This includes an anti-slip floor, a translucent roof, air vents, self closing doors with locks, privacy/occupancy indicators and a contoured seat with lid. Some, but not all, porta potties also have a non-splash urinal in addition to the standard toilet seat.

What comes with a portable toilet?

A standard porta potty comes with 2 rolls of toilet paper. Additional features can be added as needed such as hand sanitizers, fans & lighting, and paper seat covers as well.

What Kind of Diseases can you Get from Porta Potties?

Porta potties can harbor many pathogens and diseases however the risk of actually contracting a disease is usually no higher than what you would expect from any public restroom. By practicing good hygiene and washing your hands often you can help to prevent the spread of disease. Porta potties should also be serviced after every 80 to 100 uses or at least weekly to keep the bacteria levels from exceeding safe levels.

How Many Porta Potties Can be Serviced in a Day?

Typically, sanitation technicians can clean and pump 40-50 portable toilets in one day.

How do you Dispose of Waste from a Portable Toilet?

Once a truck is full of waste it is delivered to a nearby wastewater treatment plant for processing. The wastewater facility processes it in a similar fashion to raw sewage.

What Happens to Waste Collected from Porta Potties?

Typically the contents of a porta potty are removed by pumping it into a truck with a high-powered suction hose. One truck can easily service 10-20 porta potties.

How Much Waste can a Porta Potty Hold?

Most porta potties have the capacity to hold anywhere from 50 to 100 gallons of waste and chemicals. The typical standard porta potty has an average tank size of about 60-70 gallons.

Will the Blue Dye Stain Clothing?

Should you happen to get the blue liquid on your skin or clothing you needn’t worry about the stain being permanent. With the use of soap or standard laundry detergents the dye should easily come out. However, it must be noted that the blue dye can stain many porous surfaces such as non-treated wood, concrete, and rocks or landscaping.

Do Porta Potties Flush?

Standard porta potties do not flush. The standard porta potty has toilet seat that opens to a holding tank that stores and collects waste until the unit is serviced by a sanitation technician. However, there are portable toilets that have flushing mechanisms designed to suit a variety of situations.

How Far in Advance Should I Book a Porta Potty Rental?

We recommend booking at least 48-72 hours in advance, and 2-4 weeks for large events.

For weekend rentals and event work in peak season (April through October), the more lead time you give us, the more options you have on equipment and delivery timing. We can often accommodate last-minute orders — just call us at (818) 686-1990 and we’ll do our best to fit you in.

Is There a Minimum or Maximum Rental Period?

There’s no strict minimum — we rent for a single day, a weekend, or as long as your project runs.

Construction sites often rent for months at a time with recurring weekly service. Event customers usually book for one day plus delivery and pickup. If your timing changes mid-rental, just call and we’ll extend or end the booking.

Will My Porta Potty Be Clean and Ready When It Arrives?

Yes — every unit is fully sanitized, restocked, and inspected before delivery.

Our drivers check seals, locks, vent screens, and supplies on every drop-off. If anything is wrong when the unit arrives, call us right away and we’ll send a replacement or correction the same day where possible.

How Much Does a Porta Potty Rental Cost?

Pricing depends on the unit type, rental length, location, and service frequency.

A standard porta potty for a weekend event costs less than a long-term construction rental with weekly service. The clearest way to get accurate pricing is to call us at (818) 686-1990 or request a free quote online — we’ll factor in delivery distance, service schedule, and any add-ons so there are no surprises later.

Are Quotes Free?

Yes — all quotes are free with no obligation.

Tell us what type of event or project you’re running, expected attendance, how long you need the unit, and the delivery address. We’ll come back with a clear price and timing. No deposit is required to get a quote.

What's Included in the Rental Price?

Delivery, pickup, regular servicing, and standard supplies are all included in the base price.

Our quote covers placement of the unit, scheduled cleaning while it’s on-site, toilet paper and hand sanitizer restocking, and removal at the end of your rental. Special-event units may include additional restocks based on guest count.

What Types of Portable Restrooms Do You Offer?

We rent standard porta potties, flushing units, ADA-accessible units, luxury restroom trailers, and hand-washing stations.

Standard porta potties are the most common choice for construction sites and outdoor events. Flushing units add a fresh-water flush for added comfort. Our luxury restroom trailers offer climate control, real sinks, and full interior lighting — popular for weddings and upscale corporate events.

What's the Difference Between a Standard Porta Potty and a Luxury Restroom Trailer?

A standard porta potty is a single-stall plastic unit; a luxury restroom trailer is a multi-stall climate-controlled trailer with running water.

Luxury trailers feel close to a residential bathroom — flushing toilets, real sinks with hot water, mirrors, lighting, and sometimes climate control. They’re chosen for weddings, galas, and high-end events where guest comfort is part of the experience.

Do You Have ADA-Accessible Portable Restrooms?

Yes — we offer ADA-compliant wheelchair-accessible portable restrooms.

These are larger units with ground-level entry, interior support rails, and enough space for a wheelchair to turn around. ADA units are required by federal law at most public events and are strongly recommended for any event open to the public.

What Features Come with Your Restroom Trailers?

Climate control, flushing toilets, real sinks with hot water, interior lighting, and stall privacy — across multiple sizes.

Our trailers come in 2-stall, 3-stall, 4-stall, 8-stall, and 10-stall configurations. Larger trailers add features like mirrors, vanity space, and ambient lighting. They’re ideal for weddings, galas, corporate retreats, and upscale events where guest experience matters.

Where Do You Deliver?

We deliver across our owned yards in California, Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia — and partner with a nationwide network for delivery anywhere in the continental US.

Our owned operations include Carlsbad and Escondido (Southern California), Phoenix, Atlanta, and Brighton (Denver area). For anywhere outside those markets, we coordinate delivery through our broker network — same VIP service, local equipment. Call us with your address and we’ll quote it.

How Do You Decide Where to Place the Porta Potty on My Site?

We coordinate placement with you during the booking call.

The ideal location is level ground accessible to our delivery truck and (for ongoing rentals) to our weekly service truck. Avoid soft soil, blocked driveways, or low-clearance spots. If your site has tricky access — a tight gate, a slope, mud — tell us ahead of time so we send the right equipment.

How Many Porta Potties Do I Need for My Event?

A general rule is one standard porta potty per 50 guests for a 4-hour event with no alcohol.

If you’re serving alcohol, add 15-20% more units. For events over 4 hours, double up after the 4-hour mark. We’ll help you finalize the count based on guest list, duration, and food and drink service — it’s part of the free quote.

Do You Handle Weddings?

Yes — VIP Restrooms specializes in upscale weddings and luxury restroom trailer rentals.

For weddings we usually recommend our restroom trailers over standard porta potties for guest comfort. We coordinate placement with your venue and planner, deliver and set up early so everything is ready before guests arrive, and remove cleanly the day after.

How Many Porta Potties Does OSHA Require for a Construction Site?

OSHA requires one portable restroom per 10-20 workers, with the exact ratio depending on workforce size.

For 20 or fewer workers, one unit is generally compliant. Above 20 workers, additional units are required to keep wait times reasonable. We’ll size the order to your crew count and shift schedule, and we offer monthly billing for long-term construction rentals.
