How Many Porta Potties Do You Need? Guide by Guest Count
Plan on one porta potty for every 50 guests at an event of four hours or less. Add units when the event runs longer, when alcohol is served, or when the temperature is above about 85°F.
Too few units means lines. Too many means paying for restrooms nobody uses. Standard units start around $150-$325 each for a weekend, so the count affects your budget directly. Here is how to size your order.
Porta Potty Count by Guest Count
| Guest Count | Standard Event (4 Hours or Less) | Long Event or Alcohol Served | Hand-Washing Stations (If Food Is Served) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 2 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 2 to 3 |
| 200 | 4 | 5 | 3 to 4 |
| 300 | 6 | 7 | 4 to 6 |
Hand-washing counts use one station per 50 to 75 guests. For events over 300 guests, send us your headcount and we will size the order with you. Our planning guide has more detail.
What Pushes the Number Up
- A longer event. Past about four hours, guests go more often. Add a unit.
- Alcohol. Bars and beverage service lead to more trips.
- Heat. Above roughly 85°F people drink more water. Add about 10% for hot-weather and all-day events.
- No other restrooms. If the venue has none, the portable units carry the full load.
Counts by Event Type
Weddings
Use one unit per 50 guests for a four-hour reception, or closer to one per 35 for a longer reception with a bar. A luxury restroom trailer needs one stall for every 50 to 75 guests.
Suggested setup for 100 guests: Three flushable units or a 2-stall trailer. See wedding restroom rentals.
Backyard Parties and BBQs
One unit covers up to 50 guests. Add a hand-washing station when food is served.
Suggested setup for 30 guests: One standard unit and one hand-washing station, about $300-$575. See party rentals.
Festivals and Concerts
All-day events with drinks sit in the higher column of the chart, and multi-day events need servicing between days.
Suggested setup: Start from the long-event column and add 10% for heat. See festival portable toilets and concert restroom rentals.
Construction Sites
Job sites are sized by crew, not guests. Review the OSHA restroom requirements for your site.
What to Add to Your Count
- Hand-washing stations. One per 50 to 75 guests, near the food and drinks.
- Wheelchair-accessible units. Plan for them at public events and wherever a permit calls for it.
- Sink units. A built-in sink suits small events with no water nearby.
Placement Tips
- Choose firm, level ground a comfortable distance from where guests eat.
- Leave truck access. The delivery vehicle needs to reach within about 15 feet of the spot.
Standard units are self-contained, so no power or water hookup is needed.
