How many restrooms does a marathon need?
A good starting point is one toilet for every 50 participants, weighted toward the start area, then adjusted for course length, start waves and expected spectators. Large fields, hot or cold weather and early starts all push the number up. Share your registration numbers, start times and course map and we’ll set counts for the start, finish and course. For other event types, see our guide to how many porta potties you need.
A race puts thousands of people in one place at once. Demand does not build gradually: it peaks in the hour before the start, then again at the finish. A plan that works for a festival can leave a long line at the start line, the most common complaint at most races. Plan one hand washing station for every 2 to 4 toilets, plus stations wherever food is served.
Where to place marathon restrooms
| Area | What it needs |
|---|---|
| Start area | The largest share of units. Runners arrive early and everyone needs a restroom before the gun. Spread units in several banks so lines don’t block the corrals |
| Finish and festival area | Units for finishers, spectators and family, plus hand washing stations near food |
| Along the course | Units at aid stations and other points on longer courses, such as a marathon or half marathon |
| Staff and volunteer areas | Separate units so runner lines don’t slow your crew |
| Accessibility | Wheelchair-accessible units at the start and finish, on firm, level ground with a clear route |

What race restroom rentals cost
Restroom trailers start at $1,000. The total depends on the number and types of units, how many drop points you have, the servicing schedule and the delivery location. See our porta potty rental prices, or send us your race details for a firm quote.
