Standard Porta Potty and Port-a-John Rental

Home > Products > Standard Porta Potty

The workhorse unit, also called a porta john or port-a-john, for job sites, festivals, races and film locations where a fully plumbed restroom would be overkill.

4 ft x 4 ft x about 7.5 ft · 50-gallon waste tank · Roughly 150 uses between services

Is a standard porta potty the right unit?

The standard unit is the one most jobs actually need. It handles roughly 150 uses between services, fits anywhere a truck can reach, and costs a fraction of a flushable unit or a trailer. Step up only when the people using it will notice.

How many porta potties (porta johns) do you need?

Job sites. A common rule of thumb is one unit per ten workers on a standard 40-hour week, which keeps a crew working instead of queuing. OSHA’s legal minimum can be lower; see our OSHA restroom requirements.

Events. Plan one unit per 50 guests for an event of three to four hours. Add units when alcohol is served, the event runs longer, or there are no other restrooms nearby. For more event types, see our guide to how many porta potties you need.

Rental terms, service and cost

Rent by the day, the weekend or the month. Your VIP coordinator arranges delivery, placement and pickup with the local provider. Place the unit on firm, reasonably level ground where a service truck can reach; it’s light enough to move if the site changes. For longer placements we set the service interval from crew size and site conditions. Heat, humidity and traffic all shorten it, so a schedule that works in spring isn’t the right one in August.

The price depends on the number of units, rental length, service frequency and delivery location. See our porta potty rental prices, or send us your dates and site address for a firm quote.

Standard porta potty FAQs

How many people can one standard porta potty handle?

Roughly 150 uses between services. On a job site that works out to about one unit per ten workers over a standard week. At events, headcount and event length set the number, and alcohol pushes it up.

Is a porta john the same as a porta potty or portable toilet?

Yes. Porta john, port-a-john, porta potty and portable toilet are all names for the same standard unit.

Does it have a sink?

No. Add a hand washing station next to the unit, or choose the porta potty with a built-in sink.

Does it flush?

No. It uses a 50-gallon holding tank with ventilation to control odor. The flushable porta potty is the step up.

How often is it serviced?

We set the interval from usage and conditions, not a default cycle.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

No. Accessible units are a separate product, and public events should plan for them from the start.

Do you rent towable porta potties?

Towable units, mounted on a small trailer so they can move with a crew, are available in many areas. Ask for one in your quote.
